Precision vs play.

Pilates is one of those movement modalities that have some guiding principles, one of which is precision. But what does precision mean for movement, and is that really something to strive for?

Joseph Pilates (the founder of Pilates) said that “It is better to do five repetitions perfectly than 20 without paying attention.” What he meant was: every movement in Pilates is important and has a purpose. You’ll get more out of your classes if you are present and do the exercises the way that they’re taught. This is a huge advantage to taking classes with Acuity Pilates studio: all of our instructors give you real-time feedback to support the precision of your movements.

On the flip side, while we agree that it’s important to pay attention to your body and your movements, striving for perfection isn’t always a healthy approach to movement. There’s a lot to be said for exploring movements, and making mistakes! In fact, it’s when we make mistakes that our greatest learning occurs! So rather than being perfect with movement, maybe allowing yourself to be imprecise and “figure it out” is okay too.
